I had wondered why not sew straight onto squares of white fabric instead of paper. White fabric isn't very expensive and it would add durability and strength and be less mess/time consuming. I did a little research and found that originally strip quilts were sewn onto squares of old bed sheets for exactly the reasons i had thought out.
